What you need to Build A Bike

Here is the list of items you will need to build a bike.

The list is organized in sections.  Each section will build a specific part of

your bike.  It's a nice way to break things up if you are buying only a few parts

at a time.

-This is done on a white background, so  that you can save, and print the list!-

The most important thing to remember when building your bike is....

There are NO RULES!  Here is your chance to be as creative as you want to be!

If you have questions, please ask.  buildabike@msn.com

I will post your question, and the answer right HERE!

Q  I just got a 60's or 70's banana bike. It is covered in rust but still works. I'm trying to fix it up but don't know where to start. Should i sand the rust off and re-paint? Is it possible to make a lowrider out of the same forks?
A    You can take it to a POWDERCOATING place....they will sandblast it to bare metal and powdercoating is inexpensive.  Losts of colors, doesn't scratch...baked on paint like your refridgerator!  As far as the forks...NO RULES!

Q    Should I keep the logo? Take a look at the pics.

A   First thing I do is go to GooGLe!  It's a C.C.M. Cheetah, from Canada.  Old muscle bike, I think.  You will have more time to research it!  Has a shifter!! WOW!  I would guess your bike is from the 60's, without doing more Googling.  Might think about powdercoating your fenders and chainguard  too!  I LOVE powdercoating!  Very durable and affordable!  You can even do rims.    (EX:  Blue frame and forks, with white fenders, chainguard, and rims.)                           OH!!!  The Logo!... it's a sticker, so I don't know how to save it.  I would suggest you get very good pictures of it and take them to someone who makes vinyl stickers.  Sign shops make them, but I've also seen little stands in the shopping malls here, where they can make a sticker of anything!  When in doubt...GooGLe it!  Very cool project!  I love the Chainguard too!

UpDate  We all learn stuff here! (I do EvEryDaY!)  It is a good idea to take your bike completely apart before painting.  Just paint the frame, forks, chainguard, etc.  Howerver...if you want it all one color....this turned out pretty good!  Congrats!

Q  I am very keen on building my own bike, but i need some answers:
Can you tell me some rules on how to build the frame?
Im Not sure how to begin, can i make it myself or is it better to draw it and send it in to someone who can make it for me?
NORWAY

A  I think the best way for you to build a bike frame, would be to modify an old frame.  You need to keep the headset and bottom bracket the same so that parts you will need to purchase from a bike shop will fit.  We do a lot of cutting and welding on frames here in the USA. ( It is very costly to have a frame made, and then it might not be geometrically correct.)

Q  I have the idea to build a bike, maybe you can help me:) I want to do all on my own(as much as possible) I just have a problem, I cant bend steel! I have all the materials I need.   GERMANY

A   I know that there are shops that can bend pipe.  I am not familiar with actual frame fabricating.  The only experince I have had, is re-working existing frames.  I did find a link that may help.   http://www.phred.org/~josh/build/build.html
